ENGINE MACHINING, REPAIR, & REBUILDING

Director, Coulson Compression & Measurement Co., LTD.
Are your compressors and engines being rebuilt properly? The answer is; no, probably not! We offer field service and can come to your location to remove and reinstall the compressor or engine on the unit after overhaul in our shop.

Our Promise to YOU!

Director, Coulson Compression & Measurement Co., LTD.
With over 40 years of experience and our own in-house machine shop we can control the quality of work performed on a compressor or engine rebuild. We strive to maintain our equipment and processes to the highest quality and standards to better serve you, the customer. We are a member of AERA Engine Builders Association and keep up to date on the latest engine and compressor rebuilding technology. We are here to serve you on your compressor and engine maintenance and overhaul requirements.
When performing a proper rebuild on a compressor or engine, there is a lot more to it than is typically being done by your average shop. The disassembly, cleaning, inspection, machining and reassembly are detail oriented procedures. In short, when the rebuild is complete you essentially have a new compressor or engine. Compressors are typically “overhauled” on the cheap by most shops. They do not perform detailed cleaning and inspection and most only do a quick “top end” overhaul by not completely disassembling the compressor. In-field overhaul of a compressor is almost never an option. In the field, there is no way to properly clean, hone, and reassemble the compressor, and the field is not a clean environment for reassembly.
CLEANING Using the proper equipment is crucial to a proper rebuild. Industrial cleaning equipment, not a free standing solvent tank, is critical to getting all of the parts as clean as possible. INSPECTION Proper inspection should be done with the proper tools. Micrometer, bore gauge, valve spring tester, magnifying glass, and magnetic particle inspection are some of the tools that should be used. BORING Any cylinder with scratches, out of round, worn to an oversize dimension, top to bottom taper or any other anomaly beyond published service limits must be bored and honed or sleeved and honed.
HONING Using the proper type of hone for honing cylinders is also critical for a proper honing of the cylinders. If you or your shop are using a parts store ball hone or 3 stone hone in a hand drill, you are doing it wrong. A rigid mounted industrial honing machine is the proper tool for the job and selecting the proper stones for surface finish is a must. Honing is the most critical step to insure long ring life and oil consumption control. CRANKSHAFT The crankshaft must be inspected for wear, surface finish of the journals, straightness and cracks or other damage. Crankshafts should be properly cleaned and stress relief performed. Any journal damage must be corrected by polishing, grinding or replacemen TESTING Test running a compressor or engine at the shop is highly recommended to confirm a proper rebuild or identify any leaks or problemsbefore the unit is put back in service in the field. Testing at the shop will avoid costly down time and chasing problems in the field. ASSEMBLY A clean environment is necessary for assembly of the compressor or engine. Checking ring end gap, bearing clearances, crankshaft endplay, valve stem height and valve spring pressure are just a few of the items to check during assembly. If these are out of tolerance you can expect premature wear, low oil pressure, high operating temperatures, excessive oil consumption and many other issues. It is equally important that proper torque values for all threaded parts are followed.
